Hello and welcome to Episode 5 of the MS Mobile Show!

We would like to thank you all for subscribing & listening to this & all of our previous shows. If this is your first time listening, we hope you like what you hear and become a regular listener as well.

In this episode, Kevin Harvell (@KevinHarvell) from The Tech Informist podcast steps out from behind the MS Mobile Show curtain to guest host for Vernon as he was unable to join us.

JJ & Kevin spend much of the show discussing OneDrive & what are some of their likes & dislikes of the service along with their experiences using the service on multiple platforms such as Mac, iOS & Android as well as the various versions of Windows.

Be sure to follow the show on Twitter, at @MSMobileShow, and visit the following page to find out all the ways you can subscribe msmobileshow.com/subscribe.

News

  • Next build of Windows 10 for phones is expected soon for nearly every Lumia still in use today. We recommend to not install it on your daily driver, but if you do, be aware of potential bugs. Also we recommend you do a factory reset after finishing the upgrade install
  • Market share of Windows Phone is holding steady
  • Microsoft is renegotiating the search deal with Yahoo. This is a big deal for people using Yahoo search or Bing search because having gone to a presentation on this subject Microsoft in its marketing offers combined Yahoo and Bing searches to sell as advertising.
  • Outlook app for iOS gets a nice update

  • Have a decent profile pic. – Headshot, funny, but not stupid, don’t change it too often
  • Bio – Descriptive, include hashtags, handles of other accounts, link to webpage, make use of about.me
  • Backgrounds – Banners, background, accent color
  • Pinned Tweets
  • Photo history

Tip of the Episode

Skype on all platforms

  • Video, of course. Skype is still the best VoIP service.
  • Messaging works well. May not have the stickers that Facebook does, but the benefit is that you will not have to use Facebook.
  • Works well on desktop. “Metro” app needs some work.
  • No real “web” interface yet, like GroupMe, but integration into Outlook.com and Office Online works well, without too many bells and whistles.

Guests

For this episode, we were honored with contributions by Daniel Rubino and Richard Devine, both of Windows Central fame. The four of us discussed many things Microsoft, but not nearly as much as we would have liked. Daniel and Richard have so much great insight, we could have chatted about Microsoft Mobile for hours. Here are some of the things that we discussed:

  • Overall take-aways from Mobile World Congress
  • Where the Lumia 640 and 640 XL fit into the long-term device plan for Microsoft
  • How the Microsoft Band might be welcomed in the markets outside the US
  • Why a non-tech-enthusiast may want to choose the Band
  • What can be expected from a "Hero" device running Windows 10 for phone, and why it isn't already available
  • Mobile payments on Windows devices, such as PayPal, as they could and should compete with Apple and Android Pay
  • Why Cortana everywhere changes the game
  • What is means to use the Spartan Browser and have Cortana everywhere
  • Despite the Apple TV has dropping in price to $69.99, why Microsoft may not want to dive into owning the living room with a direct competitor

Windows Phone app picks

JJ: Darklings

Vernon: ADP Mobile Solutions

Richard: Wallet Pass

Daniel: Fedora Reader

Xbox Music Picks

JJ: Breaking Benjamin
