Facebook. It permeates into the far corners of our online lives. Vernon and David discuss how Facebook on mobile has changed how the world "internets". The two weigh the reasons for and against installing Windows 10 when it is first available to the public. As always, Tip of the Episode, news, and personal app picks are included.

  2. If you want to mark a reminder as "complete" from calendar, tap it, choose "…" and select "complete."

Microsoft:

What will a Windows 7 user lose from upgrading to Windows 10?

  • First off, you'll be gaining numerous features.
  • Native DVD playback or Media Center. Solution: VLC
  • Desktop gadgets. Solution: Windows apps with Live Tiles, or Desktop Gadgets Reviver
  • Hearts, Solitaire, Pinball, etc. Solution: Windows Store apps
  • CD mounting software (iso). Solution: build into Windows 10
  • OEM software (HP Utilities, Dell Connectivity, etc). Solution: N/A
  • If you don’t have the Pro version of Windows 10, you can't choose which updates to stop vs. automatic ones.
  • Slight OneDrive change from Windows 7 to Windows 10, an even larger difference from Windows 8 though. No "online-only" options now, only picking certain folders to sync works now.

Microsoft has announced the availability date of Windows 10 for "sitdown" machines. Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview is getting much better, and shows great promise. Office for Mobile impresses. Twitter and Google frustrates. David divulges some amazing results from a Windows Phone Enthusiast Quiz that he created. Vernon expounds his experience using Windows 10 on his daily driver, the Lumia 830, for the past week. Personal apps, music, and podcast picks are shared. Hilarious chat-room banter distracts. Unintended listener bashing occurs. Fun is had by all.

If you enjoy this show and would like to hear more, be sure to subscribe. You can do so using your favorite podcast app, or by visiting msmobileshow.com/subscribe. Followed the show via Twitter at @MSMobileShow for the latest!

Feedback

  • Darrell Prichard emailed us, so go to MSMobileShow.com/Tips to get the links that he shared with us!
  • Windows Phone Enthusiast Quiz results: dvdv.kim/1HN00IY
    • Taken 158 times, 106 completes (67% completion rate) Average Score: 67%
    • Easiest question: Lumia 2520 only ran Windows RT (True/False) 95% answered correctly
    • Hardest question: Which name was never associated with a Microsoft account sign in ID? Only 35% answered correctly.

Tip of the Episode

Accounts in W10MTP:

Going to "Accounts" in the current pre-release of Windows Mobile takes you to the Work or School, etc. To add in additional email addresses, one needs to go through the Outlook app.

W10MTP on a daily driver

UI is different, and slightly disappointing for long-time Windows Phone users, but the potential to be a great relevant user interface is very clearly there. Office, Store, and Music apps show great promise. Outlook and Calendar are less impressive, but will work very well on larger-screened devices.

Using this version on your daily driver is not out of the question, just be ready to spend time in the Feedback app, sharing your thoughts on it.

News

Rumors:

"Cityman" (940 XL), and "Talkman" (940), possibly using USB type-C, likely required to use Continuum for Mobile. Snap 810, 3GB RAM, 20, and 5 MP cameras. 32 GB storage, microSD support, 5.7", 5.2" 8core vs 6core, 3000 vs 3300 mAh.

Microsoft:

The availability date of Windows 10 has been announced. July 29th, machines currently running Windows 7. 8. 8.1 will be able to install Windows 10 for free. The OS version will be preinstalled, similar to how Xbox games can be downloaded before they are officially available for use. OS requirements are simple, but some anomalies were noticed: For two-factor authentication, requires "use of a pin, biometric, or a phone with Wi-Fi or BT."

There just seems to be an awful lot of drama when it comes to things Microsoft is involved in here lately. So this episode is just that, all about that drama.

Now before you fire off some hateful emails or tweets, please hear me out.

First there was the issue with the UK broadcasting company essentially forcing Microsoft to re-brand SkyDrive into OneDrive, but that was not enough. Of course they want Microsoft to change Skype as well. Seriously?

Next, many people are surprised that Microsoft is switching from Windows Phone to Windows Mobile.

And to put the proverbial cherry on top, Snapchat Support on Twitter has Windows Mobile fans all excited that an official app MAY be on the way in the future. I would not hold your breath on that anytime soon, but I could be wrong.

Tip of the Episode

Whether you are a Windows Phone user, iOS user, or Android user - BACKUP your content.

If your device breaks, or gets lost, etc. you'll need a cloud solution for your content.

Windows Phone: OneDrive, iOS: iCloud, Android: Google Drive

Backup in general: Contacts, photos, videos

More specifically to Windows Phone: App list and settings, go into each app and look for a "backup to OneDrive" option. Identify each app that can't be backed up, take screenshots or use other methods to back that up. Lots of content, like those from social sites, does not need to be backed up.

Quick and easy way to find locally-stored content: Files app on Windows Phone.

Feedback

Last week we had a poll which asked how many hands you tend to use while using your phone. We had some great responses, of which some were quite surprising. David and I ended up discussing in depth, so if you are interested, go back to last week's episode at msmobileshow.com/008. You can also see the poll results at … http://msmobileshow.com/008/

A special shout-out to Vernon's brother, Pete, who recently discovered podcasts after years of badgering from his big brother. So far he has been listening to the Dave Ramsey Show, and maybe, just maybe, he will be listening to this episode on his Galaxy S4. He did recommend the app Podcast Addict, which can be found in the Google Play store. If you hear the show through your Android device, let us know which app you prefer!

Another shout-out is in order to Robert Shurbet, also known as The Cheeky Taurus. As some of you know, I have been debating on which phone I would use to replace my wife Anna's Lumia 920 that recently died. Robert was willing to part with a device of his for a very reasonable price, and my wife and I thank him for that. Thanks!

Episode 7 - Windows 10 Mobile

Windows Phone technical preview 10? Windows 10 for phone technical preview? W10TPfp? It turns out we don't really know what to call what we just installed on our phones, but that didn't stop us from talking about it. Despite not having a specific Microsoft service to discuss, we still managed to share our personal app, music, and podcast picks, but not before sharing the affection and distain we have for what we have seen so far of Windows 10 Mobile. Lacking sleep and a dedicated producer, we still manage to slip a lame joke or two in amongst our analysis of what Microsoft enthusiasts have been trialing the past few days. Enjoy!

Tip of the Episode

OneNote

OneNote -> Notebooks -> Sections -> Pages

Can change background chrome to resemble a three-ring binder. Especially useful for handwriting because of the lines.

Big difference between OneNote and Word, it that is designed for unfinished work.

  • Basically a huge virtual whiteboard, that doesn’t lose its data when “erased”.
  • There is no enforced uniform page layout or structure.
  • Most common on laptops or desktops, but tablets becoming more popular, basically adding in environments where pen, audio, or video notes are more appropriate than an intensive use of keyboard.

Search all the things!

  • Words
  • Pictures (including words in pictures)
  • Screencaps
  • Handwriting (“electronic ink”)
  • Web links
  • Document scans (ie: PDFs) because of OCR
  • Audio

Sync everywhere - Multiple users can edit shared documents at the same time, whether they are online at the time or not. If there are version sync issues, the merging is very easy.

Tip: If you know several users are in the document at the same time, take a moment to ensure that you are on the latest version before editing.

Recent OneNote API helped add in a few new features, including:

  • OneNote Clipper - Can send (“clip”) either the whole page, including the screenshot, or just the article text.
  • Email to OneNote - Great feature, but we already had this on Windows Mobile. Glad to see it come back!
  • Office Lens - App for Windows Phone, which helps take images from the camera, and convert them to more-usable editable notes.

Windows Phone

Absolutely great! Not too many features to clutter it up. Very smooth app and integration.

Windows Universal

Very good for touch, but still has plenty of features.

iOS

Free

Good, but is tougher on a small-screen device.

Android

Free. Can't beat free!

PC

Really love the formatting shortcuts.

Mac

Very similar to OneNote for Windows.

Web

Should be the way that you all try it out. Great tool for students. Nearly all of the functionality of the PC (desktop) version. Doesn’t quite have the “solid” feel that we like with the desktop version.

Tip of the Episode

Skype on all platforms

  • Video, of course. Skype is still the best VoIP service.
  • Messaging works well. May not have the stickers that Facebook does, but the benefit is that you will not have to use Facebook.
  • Works well on desktop. “Metro” app needs some work.
  • No real “web” interface yet, like GroupMe, but integration into Outlook.com and Office Online works well, without too many bells and whistles.

Guests

For this episode, we were honored with contributions by Daniel Rubino and Richard Devine, both of Windows Central fame. The four of us discussed many things Microsoft, but not nearly as much as we would have liked. Daniel and Richard have so much great insight, we could have chatted about Microsoft Mobile for hours. Here are some of the things that we discussed:

  • Overall take-aways from Mobile World Congress
  • Where the Lumia 640 and 640 XL fit into the long-term device plan for Microsoft
  • How the Microsoft Band might be welcomed in the markets outside the US
  • Why a non-tech-enthusiast may want to choose the Band
  • What can be expected from a "Hero" device running Windows 10 for phone, and why it isn't already available
  • Mobile payments on Windows devices, such as PayPal, as they could and should compete with Apple and Android Pay
  • Why Cortana everywhere changes the game
  • What is means to use the Spartan Browser and have Cortana everywhere
  • Despite the Apple TV has dropping in price to $69.99, why Microsoft may not want to dive into owning the living room with a direct competitor
